It is possible to do a Kenya safari as a budget trip. You will get closer to the wildlife and save money by doing all the planning yourself. For example, you can rent a taxi as a safari vehicle for cheap, and while it doesn't boast all the modern conveniences it still allows you to get close to African wildlife.
You can also hire bikes at Elsa Gate for 4 pounds and go on safari in Hell's Gate National Park by Lake Naivasha in the Rift Valley, where you will only pay the park entrance feel of 15 pounds. The sandy terrain makes riding tough at times, but it is worth the up close view you can get of zebras, warthogs, and giraffe gathering at watering holes on the Savannah.
